The worst advice I ever got...

Homeless punk rock kids hang out in Harvard Square.

They sit on blankets, play beat up acoustic guitars and beg for money.

Two summers ago a couple of them got an idea to make some serious cash.

They set up a bad advice booth.

Locals and tourists alike actually stood in line and paid two dollars for what the kids barked to be “The worst advice in Massachusetts”.

Not being able to help myself, I succumbed.

I got in line, paid my $2 and while the advice I got is not fit to print, it’s still not the worst I’ve ever gotten.

It was the funniest however and totally worth the two bucks.

The worst advice I ever got…

Advice that left my jaw on the ground and rendered me utterly flabbergasted came in this one simple sentence.

“Make sure you don’t dream too big”

Shock and anger fell upon me.

Throughout our whole lives people have implied this sentiment but for me it was the first time anyone actually came out and said it.

I was blown away.

I stared in disbelief at the person who happens to be a friend.

I begged them to promise they would never say that to anyone ever again.

He denied my request and defended the statement.

So I am writing today to be the voice that calls you to your dream and to let you know you can make it come true.

I exist in part to call out to the world this truth:

It is impossible to dream too big!!!!!

Chase them down…

Build them huge…

Whatever you do, don’t be “realistic”

Realism does not change the world

I am not calling you to recklessness

Count the cost

Take a big brave breath

live your dream

Whats your dream?

Change the world today...

“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”  Mother Theresa

I want to make ripples.

For me ripples are made when I listen to someone and respond from my heart.

When an idea that will shine a little love and light in a moment becomes an action, ripples are made.

When my desire to love strangers outweighs my insecurity and fear, ripples are made.

Lives are changed.

The world is made of lives.

When you change a life you change the world.

Anonymously pay for someone’s lunch today.

Write a handwritten note of encouragement to someone who needs it.

Give up your great parking spot for someone or slow down to let someone in.

Its Saturday…

Cast some stones.

Make some ripples.

Change the world...

Don't waste your heartache

“Weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them” A.A. Milne

Over a decade ago I had hit a serious rough patch.

My father was dying.

Our finances were bad.

I was morbidly obese.

I was so depressed and it just felt like a season of never ending struggle.

Have you ever been there?

Maybe you’re there right now.

For me it was paralyzing.

For me it was the worst season of my life.

At my lowest point my wife gave me a piece of advice.

“Embrace it”

Excuse me?

You want me to embrace this thing that is killing me?

“I mean it,” She said.

“This is here to teach you something about yourself and if you fight it you will miss it”

Those were the words that began to light my darkened path back to life.

When I choose to see my struggles through the lens of redemption I stop seeing them as struggles.

Redemption is what happens when your seemingly terrible situations bring about powerful blessings for others.

I have yet to have a struggle that I have not been able to use as an eventual blessing.

Working with individuals interested in figuring out how to turn their own struggles into blessings for others is a big part of why I chose to work as a life coach.

Right now you may not be able to see the hope you have to offer others.

I do…
